Controls Engineer

The Prime Data Centers (PDC) Senior Controls Engineer reports to the VP of Engineering and is responsible for controls engineering efforts related to a portfolio of datacenter projects which can include new construction, phased expansion, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, BAS/BMS/EPMS/DCIM equipment standards, development of design standards, processes, and procedures. This role will support long-term business strategies aligned with key Prime stakeholders to manage the relationship and output of key design partners and equipment suppliers for their assigned projects.
Innovation and collaboration:
Supports innovation & development in concert with the VP of Engineering and other PDC stakeholders including investigation of new products and services, and how they will be assimilated into PDC standards.
Collaborates closely cross-functionally – Construction, Procurement, Operations, Sales, Product, Marketing, Corporate Development, etc – to support controls engineering design requirements.
Collaborates with construction and procurement teams to effectively procure, install, and commission design solutions.
Work closely with Construction, Procurement, and Operations to find a balance between cost-effective solutions & operational sustainability.
Assist in development and maintenance of sustainability benchmarking and innovation to incorporate sustainable technology in a cost-effective manner.
- Collaborates with Operations teams to ensure design standards and best practices with their requirements.
- Method Of Procedure (MOP) review and validation with operations teams.
Design and construction support:
Performs controls engineering tasks to support master planning/concept designs as part of PDC’s investment planning, review, and approval process.
Reviewing, updating, and authoring PDC design and construction standards in collaboration with PDC stakeholders.
Authoring, editing, and reviewing Request for Proposals (RFPs) for controls related bids.
Reviewing and bid levelling/scope verification for controls proposals.
Controls (BAS/BMS/EPMS/DCIM) Subject Matter Expert (SME).
Responsible for reviewing controls deliverables such as specifications, schematics, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), sequence of operations (SOO), points list, network designs, and submittals/shop drawings.
Review consultants' engineering calculations, run independent engineering and cost analysis.
Supports the design and construction team to provide detailed owner review of design and construction deliverables such as early design packages, drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, Requests for Information (RFI’s), and informal coordination.
Supports the management of regional design team partners to adopt and accommodate standards and best practices for design.
Opines on proposed deviations to the standards or the requirements.
Research new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection equipment and related components.
Conduct value engineering analyses and provides system recommendations based on ROI and simple payback in collaboration with construction cost estimators.
Integrated Automation System (IAS) points list and sequences of operation.
Includes BAS/BMS (HVAC controls), EPMS (Electrical controls), and DCIM (Customer portal)
Utilize engineering analysis programs (or reviewing works created by others) along with professional judgment to analyse the following:
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculations.
Normal and failure mode load and electrical block sizing calculations.
Energy modeling analysis and reports (review only).
Hydraulic calculations for water-based plumbing and fire protection systems (review only)
Simple payback/ROI calculations for various system/equipment comparisons.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and reports (review only).
Customer interface and facility support
Attend various design and construction related meetings with other PDC stakeholders, design consultants, and construction partners; Most meetings will be virtual with some on-site meetings required on an as-needed basis.
Meets with customers to understand and incorporate requirements; Most meetings will be virtual with some on-site meetings required on an as-needed basis.
Commissioning (Cx) support of Level 4 and Level 5 Cx efforts.
Troubleshoot controls system challenges/issues.
Respond on an as-needed basis to emergencies.

Additional duties as assigned from time to time by the VP of Engineering.
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited university or college preferred.
Technical degree, trade training, and/or field experience required at minimum.
5 years of experience in mission critical and/or data center mechanical design and construction required; 7-10 years preferred.
Understanding of critical cooling infrastructure within a data center and how power sources provide cooling redundancy.
Proficient in Bluebeam, Teams, Excel, and Word software.
Experience in working with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Psychrometric analysis, Load/Energy calculations, and CFD analysis.
Understanding of applicable construction codes with an emphasis on the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Mechanical Code (IMC).
Understanding of data center industry standards (e.g. ASHRAE TC9.9, BICSI Data Center Standards)
